MTF Week 8

This week for MTF we listened to the last group left to present their oral presentations were Lisa Lane-Collins, Sebastian Hudson, Simon Kuchel, Joshua Bevan and Daniel Trembath.

First up was Lisa with her chosen producer Trent Reznorr the former Nine Inch Nails member. Trents main line of work was with Marilyn Manson and his own band NIN but also created theme and in game music to the popular pc shooter “Quake”. Trents sound is purely industrial and lacks in tonal warmth giving you that build up feeling for heavily distorted choruses.

Sebastian was next up and talked about producer and engineer Steven Wilson. At 40 years of age Steven Wilson has become the main producer for hit metal band “Opeth”. With some of his earlier recordings being done with a local underground band by the name of “The Porcupine Tree”.

Simons producer Phil Spector born in 1940 spent his early years as a loner but recorded a large number of artists in his youth making him an early millionaire and allowed him to retire at a very early age. But during the late 60’s Spector came out of retirement to record the controversial Beatles album “Let It Be”. The trademark that gave Spector his name was the ability to create “The Wall of Sound”. In other words creating a mix so heavy that it sounds as if its been layered 1000s of times.

Dans presentation on DJ/Producer/Engineer etc. Simon Luickie commonly known as Groove Terminator was quite interesting as it took a step away from everyone else in the class. His works include Australian artists such as Grinspoon, Savage Garden and Groove Armada.

The last presentation was on Phil Ramone given by Joshua. Phil was born in South Africa and over his career built up an amazing amount of Grammy’s 14 to be exact. Phil has worked extensively with artists such as Billy Joel and Paul Simon. But has also been involved with a lot of other Pianists and international bands.
