In our first week back to MTF with our new lecturer David Grice. We began by talking about next weeks excursion to Mixmaster’s studio then started listening to the first group of studio presentations.
The works we heard this week were engineered and produced by:
· Rowan
· Myself
· Brendan
· Scott H
· Stuart
· Josh
Rowans’ recording was of a friend’s metal band where the singer became harder to deal with than the actual recording itself. The quality of the final mix down though was quite good despite the singer not pulling his weight and having a cold.
I was up next and received fairly positive feedback on my recording of Stuarts band 'Bad Bodine'. The snare could of been a lot crackier though listening back to it on another set of speakers.
Brendan’s recording reminded me of The Vines meets Led Zeppelin with the whole recording containing lots of ambiance and reverb. I thought it suited the band quite well but Lisa who is good friends with the band thought otherwise saying it didn't suit them at all.
Scott Herrimans presentation featured a cover band playing a cover of Black Sabbaths 'Paranoid'. The recording was pretty well recorded with the style captured well. Scott encountered band politics and a unhappy guitarist as he didn't like the amp he had recently purchased.
Stuart followed Scott and we listened to his recording which was quite clear and crisp. The female vocalist was recorded well with everything in the mix being quite audible. The only thing i could fault with it was the bass was a tad boomy in places.
Josh's recording of a knock up class band was quite amusing due to the fact Jake was singing Divo's 'Holy Diver'. But overall It was not too bad a mix considering the time of night and circumstances in which it was recorded.
Lauren was the last to present and the style of her recording reminded me of something you would hear on a Ministry of Sound Chillout session CD. The blend of her mix was quite nice and the song suited her style of mixing well.
