City Life

3 Minutes ‘ 00 Seconds
I composed my song ‘City Life’ in a Moby influenced style with the main focus being on the drums, bass and strings. The orchestral chords along with the New York City traffic I believe creates an ironically relaxing euphoria.
When I started writing the parts for “City Life” I tried almost every instrument just to try and get the sound I was looking for. I used different types of automation including panning and volume. For my drum track I set the MIDI Channel to 10 first of all then used the hyper editor to insert my drum beat but at the end of the track I recorded in real time as I felt the matrix and hyper editor were too robotic.
The bass was also recorded in real time for the same reasons and I just copied and pasted the regions as needed. I used velocity control in some parts of the song such as the string but I didn’t change it very much as I like the occasional slip in performance to show the listener there’s a ‘real person’ behind that created it. I noted the 3 sections in my songs with markers to show when the instrument enters / re-enters.
In the final mix I feel like I managed to get the sound I was looking for and was happy with the simplicity of my track.
